Advanced Architectural Construction
This module introduces the principles and practices of construction technology for long-span and tall buildings. It focuses on the construction systems of basement, building façade and envelope systems as well as steel construction. It also covers the new and recent construction technologies and systems including modular construction (MC) and Industrialised Building System (IBS).
Project 1: Industrialised Building System
This is a group assignment which predominantly relate to the topic of Industrialised Building System (IBS). Before embarking on this project students will be exposed to different types and methods of the IBS system and the calculation of IBS scoring in the classroom. Firstly, each group are required to design a 3-storey apartment block using mainly IBS components.
Project 2: Construction Solutions
This assignment is aligned with the Studio Design Project (semester 4) and aims to facilitate students in the technical studies and development of their design. It deals with the analysis and establishment of the structural and the envelope systems of the student’s design to ensure that the design has logical and workable construction systems. It also encourages students to think about construction as integral part of the design and not just an afterthought. Most of the times amateur designers tend to design their spaces without thinking about the construction aspects and later on have to change and redesign their schemes due to the designs were unbuildable. This assignment was designed with the intention to tackle this issue and to increase the technical competency of students.
Reflection
Throughout the course of this module, I learned how to utilize IBS method to design and also the effectiveness and advantages of IBS method. I also learned about the advantages and disadvantages of precast materials and how they are used in construction and also the method of manufacturing them. For the projects of this module, there were some issues which occurred due to bad teamwork but we were still able to submit in time. I believe this module will benefit me a lot in the future when I take on future projects which requires the usage of IBS construction method.
