Architectural Design V
This module emphasizes on the idea of 'place-making for the urban communities.' Students undergo studio-based exercises that deals with urban blocks with a dense urban environment. The emphasis will be on exploring the notion of 'place-making' and architecture that responds to it. The final outcome is an architectural design that is responsive to its urban character, The objective of this module is to introduce aspects of the city and urbanity in relation to architectural design, to develop an awareness and application of legislative requirements and socio-behavorial patterns of urban environments and communities in architectural design, and to explore key sages involved in the architectural design development.
Project 1a: Preliminary Studies - Townscape Appraisal
This project is a preparatory task that investigates the character of a place and architecture for place-making through the 'Townscape Assessment'. The purpose is to evaluate the character, identity, and uniqueness of a town and urban region in order to identify opportunities for producing responsive architectural design within the urban context and place-making-led urban space. The objective of this project is to have an overview of the formation of cities and introduce basic concepts of urban design about the architectural design, to introduce and implement primary methodologies of urban studies, to investigate the role of multi-user typologies in traditional and contemporary urban societies, and to examine various examples and architectural responses for urban basics.
Project 1b & 1c
This project focuses on developing a narrative on architectural strategy in response to the relevant questions pertaining to community and its context. The design takes into consideration a holistic application of structural, spatial, functional, and environmental requirements to address the user needs for a Community Center for the Cultural and Creative City. The design development of this project will include an introduction to the legislative restrictions that impact an architectural scheme, the integration of lighting and acoustic design, as well as the design exploration and detailing of the facade and building envelopes that is coherent with the architectural language and the overall design project. The objectives of this assignment is to take into consideration key aspects of urban design and context in relation to architecture, to develop an awareness and basic compliance to Design Codes and Statutory requirements, to emphasize the importance of elevational context and composition in developing architectural design, and to implement and explore the conceptual, schematic and design development phases in an architectural design project.
Reflection
Through this module, I realized that Townscape appraisal, urban design, and place-making are vital components in shaping the built environment, enhancing communities, and fostering a sense of belonging and identity within cities and towns. These interconnected practices are instrumental in creating functional, aesthetically pleasing, and sustainable urban spaces that cater to the needs and aspirations of their inhabitants. Overall, townscape appraisal, urban design, and place-making are essential ingredients for creating a resilient, livable, and thriving community. They empower citizens to actively participate in shaping their surroundings, strengthen social ties, promote sustainable practices, stimulate economic growth, and preserve the cultural fabric that defines the community's identity.
