Architectural Design III

This module emphasizes 'Experiencing space and place' in architecture. The module aims to introduce students to an exploration of spatial typologies and poetics in architecture and the concept of neighborhood and community. The objective of this module is to allow students to develop awareness of a genius locus, emphasize the importance of site and program, introduce different spatial typologies, and to emphasize on the importance of section in the design of architectural space.

Project 1: The poetic journey structure

In groups of 3 or 4, students are to propose a spatial journey, while focusing on spatial poetics in architecture relating to the paddy field. With an analysis of a minimum of 2 precedent studies, students are to analyze and extract the spatial poetics in the selected work, identify and explained different 'modifying elements' applied in those works, and how they inform spatial use and experience. Students are then to create spatial expressions journey of different spatial qualities which impact the uses and experiential conditions of the space.

Individual Task (Precedent Studies)
Project 2A: Genius Loci

In tutorial groups, students are to conduct a site analysis on the study area which is Parit Satu Gambut or Sekolah Kebangsaan Parit 4 which is along Jalan Terusan Utama Parit 4. Students are to understand not just the physical characteristic of the site but also the people, community, culture, and history of the site as it contributes to the identity of the "place".

The site analysis, site response and design concept are separated into 5 tasks:

Task 01 - Historical research/tracings of macro site. (Slide and video presentation + compile all tasks as an A3 slide"

Task 02 - Site conditions and data collection of macro and micro sites (Presentation Board 2-4 A2)

Task 03 - Site analysis of macro and micro sites (Presentation Boards 2-4 A2)

Task 04(A) & (B) - Extracting the intangible and tangible factors (A) and personal interpretation (B) ((A) Presentation board 1-2 A2, (B) 6 A5 sketches on 1 A3 + 1A3 elaboration)

Task 05 - Site response & concept development (Presentation Board 1-2 A3 + site model 1:500)

Task 01
Task 02
Task 03
Task 04 (A) + (B)
Task 05
Project 2B: The Discovery Center

Individually, students are to design a discovery center for Jalan Terusan Utama Parit 4, Kampung Sungai Haji Dorani. By utilizing information of the past projects such as the precedents studies, and genius loci, students are to create a discovery center that includes the poetic journey and modifying elements to enhance the experiential conditions.

Reflection

Throughout the course of this module, I have realized many things that I'm lacking, both in terms of mindset and workmanship. I realized that my patience is quite limited during group works especially when issues occur. For the first project, there were many issues that happened especially in the beginning when groupmates were missing and not everyone was doing work. I should start improving my mindset and not let these issues influence on the quality of work in the future. The second thing I realized was that I lack much information regarding architectural works. During the presentation, I wasn't able to provide complete information and my composition of the presentation board was really lacking in terms of the flow of the story and the informative data required to back up the reasoning of my design. Hence, I should start to read up on how to present architectural presentations, learn more about technical drawing skills in architecture, learn more about presentation board compositions, and learn to focus more on the process of developing the design rather than just focusing on the final outcome of the design.
